Two Chicago improvising cellists--Tomeka Reid & Fred Lonberg-Holm--explore the repertoire for cello music in jazz, presenting works by Fred Katz ("Pluck It"), Sam Jones ("In Walked Ray"), Ron Carter ("Rally") and Harry Babsin ("Monti-Cello"), adding 3 new, original works by Fred Lonberg-Holm and a piece by Tomeka Reid paying homage to bassist Charles Mingus & violinist Billy Bang.

An exhilarating departure from saxophonist Paul Dunmall's Coltrane-esque approach to free improvisation with this electrified quintet of Steven Saunders on guitar, Richard Foote on trombone, James Owston on bass and Jim Bashford on drums, playing with upbeat urgency through a set of Dunmall compositions, often letting Saunder's riffs take the foreground around a first-rate set of solos.

Stepping away from his improvisational work with groups including Exploding Customer and Fire! The Montreal string quartet Quatuor Bozzini (Alissa Cheung-violin, Clemens Merkel-violin, Stephanie Bozzini-viola, Isabelle Bozzini-cello) continue their investigation of avant composers, focusing on American composer Tom Johnson through three works or minimalist precision: "Combinations for String Quartet"; "Tilework" and "Four-Note Chords in Four Voices".

Five varied and fascinating percussion duos under the title "Rhythm Mapping - Approximating Velocity" from French composer Karl Naegelen and performed by the duo of Sylvain Darrifourcq and Toma Gouband, both using traditional drums and percussion along with objects and vegetal lithophones (a collection of plants and stones); an innovative, upbeat and compelling album.

"March" refers to the foundation of repurposed march rhythms NY drummer Tomas Fujiwara employs for the compositions in his second release with his Triple Double sextet, actually two trumpet-guitar-drum trios brilliantly interacting, with fellow drummer Gerald Cleaver, both Mary Halvorson & Brandon Seabrook on guitar and Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet & Ralph Alessi on trumpet.

Confirming their place in Chicago's improv legacy, the second album from the Artifacts Trio of Nicole Mitchell on flute & electronics, Tomeka Reid on cello and Mike Reed on drums & percussion expand the AACM canon with compositions from each member, plus several insightful and lively collective improvisations and one piece each from Roscoe Mitchell and Muhal Richard Abrams.

Despite five years of performance in the NYC area, this is the debut album of the collective trio of Ingrid Laubrock on saxophones, Brandon Lopez on bass and Tom Rainey on drums, fueled by the near-telepathic rapport of Laubrock & Rainey and expanded by the ferocious and astute contributions of Lopez, avoiding histrionics through literate and impeccably controlled discourse.

Meeting at GOK Sound studio in Kichijoji, Japan in front of a small audience, Swedish baritone saxophonist Mats Gustafsson (The Thing, Fire!) also performing on flutephone and live electronics, and Otomo Yoshihide (Ground-Zero, Regenorchester) performing on guitar, turntable and banjo, recorded these eight amazing improvisations of unusual and unique attitudes and timing.

The 4th of Karl Records' collaboration series brings Turkish free improvising group Konstrukt together with Japanese experimental improviser Otomo Yoshihide, recording at the Tusk Festival in 2018, Konstrukt configured as a quintet with two drummers, winds, guitar, synth and bass, Otomo adding guitar and turntables to create a dense, exultant and exotic brew of electrified improvisation.
